THE ACADEMICS OF ROCK
Reason Y was founded in 1998 in the musically rich metropolis
of Boston, Massachusetts. Over the years the site grew from a
small community/scene-based local site focused on featuring local
bands and musicians to a broad-based promotional company offering
bands around the country everything from printing and design services
(including stickers, flyers, postcards, buttons, press kits, album
design, and website development) to record promotion and booking
services. In 2001, distribution services and individual band profiles
were added to the site, allowing fans and consumers the opportunity
to particpate... and purchase. Thus, "The Academics of Rock"
was born.
Things went well until the end of 2004 when financial difficulties
and uncertainty about the direction of the site forced us to shut
down indefinitely. Indeed, more than a year has passed since Reason
Y was last online. However, after much thinking and internal debate,
we've come to the decision to redesign, relaunch, and return to
our roots. Today Reason Y aims to be a community of creative and
forward-thinking up-and-coming independent bands and musicians
of varying styles and genres. The goal here is cooperation, not
competition. From punk to post-punk, hardcore to post-hardcore,
from straight rock-'n-roll to indie, math, acoustic, and instrumental
rock, to emo, indie pop, electronic and experimental music, chances
are someone at Reason Y is doing it and doing it well. Visitors
to our website can discover and read about amazing new bands,
download music, check out tour dates, and purchase music from
our online store.
DEMO POLICY
Reason Y is always on the lookout for up-and-coming
artists and exciting new music. Any and all bands or musicians, signed
or unsigned, are encouraged to send in their music for review; a response
is guaranteed. Simply mail us a press kit along with your CD or send
us an email with the URL of your site where we can download your music
ourselves. We will take time to review your submission and respond
as soon as we are able. However, before contacting us or submitting
your music, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the site
and bands that are already on it. They are the best indicator of what
type of music we will and will not accept. If you're looking to go
mainstream with your music, you're probably better off looking elsewhere.
DISTRIBUTION POLICY
We buy releases three copies at a time; no more no less. Our current rates are $2 per 7", $3 per CDEP, and $5 per CD/12". As you can see by checking our store, we only add what we need to cover costs for shipping and handling. Our purpose is not to turn a profit, but to expose as many people as possible to the talented artists featured on this site. The best way to do this is to keep prices affordable and enticing to the consumer. Depending on our financial status at the time we agree to distro a project, Reason Y reserves the right to offer consignment over direct payment. We only purchase packaged and pressed CDs and vinyl; no CD-Rs or demo tapes will be accepted. When shipping us your music, please package the contents well. Any damaged products we receive will not be paid for.
